STOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL

A Day without using the non-dominant arm

On Wednesday, Oct. 3rd (from 8:00 – 3:00 pm), the 8th grade students in Applications of Technology class (Mrs. Fulton) will be without the use of their non-dominant arm. They will have a tag on their non-dominate arm beginning at 8:00am. They are not to use the arm to hold objects, push, pull or in any other way use the arm. However, they should shake it out on occasions or it will go numb.

Teachers are encouraged to discuss with them how their day is going, what difficulties they have encountered, and how people lose a limb. This activity is the final part of a unit on biotechnology to better understand how technology helps those who have lost a limb due to disease, injury, or born without.

Students will have a half sheet to give to each of their class teachers at the beginning of each class and pick up at the end of each class. Teachers are asked to make any comments regarding the students’ use of the arm or if they did a great job not using their arm. Teachers need to sign the sheet as it must be returned for a grade.

Parents / guardians are also encouraged to discuss that experience with their kids at home.
