STOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL

Week One of the Summer Discovery Program at Stout was Awesome!!

The first week of the Stout Smith Summer Discovery Program was truly a blast.

Reflections on Last Week:

  • Students were reading, writing, solving story math problems about ratios, learning how to play chess, using science and engineering to construct projects that are apart of our Stout STEM curriculum, and much, much more.
  • The best part was the “Fun in the Sun” event on Friday where students got to glide down on the “Slip ‘n Slide,” play with the suds from the foam machine, jump around in a cloud of bubbles, play beach ball, and eat refreshing popsicles to celebrate the end our first week together.
  • Goal Writing for all of our Students in the Stout Summer Program: Each student will bring home a form where they are asked to set two personal goals and two academic goals for themselves to reach during the summer program.

This is a great family activity and discussion. Students will choose achievable goals, write them, then seal the form in the envelope that was provided to them and the student should return it to their first hour teacher tomorrow.

The students will receive their envelope back on the very last day of the summer program to see if they met their goal or if they need to perform additional tasks or steps to reach the goals that they set for themselves.

*Setting goals and working towards achieving them is a great life skill to establish at a young age. Please encourage your child to return their “goals” form on Monday in the envelopes provided to them. (No one will see their goals…only the student and the parent will see them.)

Looking Forward to Next Week:

  • The theme of our second week of our summer program will be on “Dinosaurs and the Mesozoic Era!”
  • All of the students will construct a STEM dinosaur model kit using engineering skills, they will research and write about the era of the Earth when the dinosaurs lived, they will take part in a dinosaur and fossil hunt, and much more.
  • On Wednesday, July 2, all students will go to Emagine Movie Theater in Canton to watch the new “Jurassic Park” movie as well
  • Students should NOT come to school on Wednesday, July 2 if they do not want to attend the trip and/or did not turn in the permission slip for the field trip.

I hope our students had a great time this week and we look forward to seeing them back on Monday.
